14th International Workshop on Fragile X

and X-Linked Mental Retardation

September 15-19, 2009

IBEROSTAR Bahia Hotel

Praia do Forte, Bahia, Brazil

These workshops, which are held every 2 years, started more than 25 years ago and were initially directed towards understanding the molecular biology of the Fragile-X syndrome. Click here to see years and venues of previous workshops. Subsequently, other forms of X-linked mental retardation were also considered and at recent workshops autosomal forms of mental retardation have also been discussed. However, the central theme of the workshop remains the Fragile-X syndrome. The workshops generally involve approximately 200 attendees, are extremely intense and an ideal platform for presenting and discussing new ideas. This is first occasion that the workshop wil be held in Latin America. The location of the workshop on the coast of Bahia in North Eastern Brazil is breath-taking and at least matches or surpasses previous locations of the workshop, which have become renowned for their unusual and exotic locations.

The Workshop will open on the afternoon of Tuesday, September 15 and will close on the evening of Friday September 18. Topics to be covered include: clinical features, molecular and cellular mechanisms of the Fragile-X syndrome, Fragile-X associated tremor/ataxia syndrome, Fragile-X associated ovarian insufficiency, X-linked mental retardation as well as Autosomal mental retardation, approaches toward identifying genes in familial and sporadic mental retardation, diagnostic and treatment issues
